The Challenge: Replacing Aging Power Line Communication in Downhole Systems
Vision iO’s ReadyCAM product line previously relied on IEEE 1901 (HomePlug AV) power line communication to transmit video data from downhole cameras to surface equipment. While functional at launch, this technology presented growing limitations that threatened the product’s long-term viability.

Poor noise immunity. Power line communication is inherently susceptible to electromagnetic noise generated by downhole equipment, pumps, and other electrical systems operating in the same well. Signal degradation in noisy environments caused intermittent video quality issues during critical inspection operations.
Aging technology with declining support. The IEEE 1901 HomePlug AV standard has seen diminishing industry investment and reduced availability of compatible chipsets. Relying on a technology with a shrinking supplier ecosystem creates long-term procurement and support risk.
Lack of public documentation. HomePlug AV chipsets and reference designs are largely proprietary with limited publicly available technical documentation. This made troubleshooting, optimization, and custom integration more difficult and time-consuming for Vision iO’s engineering team.
Vision iO defined five requirements for a replacement communication technology:
Minimum 1 km reach capability over a single cable
Minimum 10 Mbps sustained bandwidth for real-time video
Strong noise immunity in electrically noisy downhole environments
Open documentation and accessible hardware design resources
High stability for continuous operation during inspection campaigns

The Solution: SPEBlox-Long with 10BASE-T1L Single Pair Ethernet
BotBlox SPEBlox-Long provided the communication backbone Vision iO needed to replace HomePlug AV. SPEBlox-Long implements the 10BASE-T1L Single Pair Ethernet standard, which delivers Ethernet connectivity over a single twisted pair copper cable at distances up to 1,000 meters.

10BASE-T1L is an IEEE 802.3cg standard designed specifically for long-distance, single-pair Ethernet communication in industrial and field instrumentation applications. Unlike traditional Ethernet, which requires four twisted pairs and is limited to 100 meters, 10BASE-T1L operates over the same single twisted pair cables that many downhole and industrial systems already use for legacy communication protocols.
Key advantages of SPEBlox-Long for the Vision iO application:
Single twisted pair operation. SPEBlox-Long transmits Ethernet data over the same type of cable that Vision iO’s downhole systems already deploy, eliminating the need for cable infrastructure changes in existing well installations.
10 Mbps sustained bandwidth. The 10BASE-T1L link provides stable 10 Mbps throughput, sufficient for real-time video streaming from downhole cameras at the resolution and frame rates required for visual inspection and logging operations.
Long-distance reach. SPEBlox-Long achieved 625 meters of stable communication distance in Vision iO’s testing, exceeding the company’s initial performance expectations for their target well depths. The 10BASE-T1L standard supports up to 1,000 meters under optimal cable conditions.
Strong noise immunity. The 10BASE-T1L physical layer is designed for operation in electrically noisy industrial environments. Compared to HomePlug AV, SPEBlox-Long demonstrated significantly better noise rejection in Vision iO’s downhole testing conditions.
Open documentation and design resources. BotBlox provides publicly available datasheets, CAD models, and test data for SPEBlox-Long. Vision iO’s engineering team was able to evaluate, prototype, and integrate the product using readily accessible technical resources without requiring NDAs or proprietary development tools.
The Results: Stable Long-Range Ethernet for Downhole Video
625-meter reach achieved. SPEBlox-Long delivered stable 10 Mbps Ethernet connectivity at 625 meters over a single twisted pair cable in Vision iO’s application testing. This distance covers the vast majority of well depths targeted by the ReadyCAM product line.

Stable bandwidth under operational conditions. The 10 Mbps link maintained consistent throughput during extended testing periods, providing the reliable video streaming performance required for commercial inspection operations.
Improved noise immunity. SPEBlox-Long demonstrated measurably better noise rejection compared to the previous HomePlug AV solution, reducing the risk of video quality degradation in electrically noisy downhole environments.
Faster integration cycle. The availability of open documentation, datasheets, and CAD models from BotBlox allowed Vision iO to complete the integration faster than anticipated. The engineering team was able to design the mechanical and electrical integration using publicly available resources rather than waiting for proprietary support channels.
Future design adoption. Based on the successful ReadyCAM integration, Vision iO plans to use SPEBlox-Long as the standard communication backbone for similar future product designs, including applications in underwater robot tethers and long-distance industrial instrumentation.
